Current Economic Climate Sparks Big Rise in Treatment of Depression and Anxiety

NeuroWellness, Inc. has seen a dramatic increase in the number of people seeking non-pharmaceutical solutions to depression and anxiety since October of 2008. This Dallas-based neuroscience clinic has recorded a 60% rise in requests and intakes beginning shortly after the economic crisis began last year.

Dallas, Texas (PRWEB) May 1, 2009 -- Over the past 5 months, NeuroWellness, Inc. has seen a dramatic increase in the number of people seeking non-pharmaceutical solutions to depression and anxiety. The Dallas-based neuroscience clinic that specializes in treating ADHD with non-drug-based amino acids, has recorded a 60% rise in requests and intakes for depression and anxiety. This began shortly after the economic crisis began last year.

This increase in requests for help was quite unexpected. "Because our primary focus is on helping children and adults eliminate their ADHD symptoms, we were surprised when the calls requesting natural depression treatment and natural anxiety treatment continued to escalate," says NeuroWellness CEO, Dr. Robert Neff. Over the past year, NeuroWellness has noticed a steady increase in calls about natural solutions to these more common psychological disorders. Dr. Neff believes two factors may have sparked this increase - the economic crisis and the rising concern about antidepressants causing major health problems.

Although antidepressants are the most prescribed medication in the U.S., a recent meta-analysis of published clinical trials (The Emperor's New Drugs, by Kirsch, Moore, Scoboria and Nicholls, APA, 2002) indicated that antidepressants offer little meaningful benefit. In fact, the research consistently suggested that as much as seventy-five percent (75%) of the impact from antidepressants can be attributed to placebo effect. Furthermore, in 2004 the FDA concluded that antidepressants increase risk of suicidal thoughts and required a black box warning be added to labels.

Because amino acids are not drugs and therefore not as profitable to manufacturers, the general public is far less aware of their high level of effectiveness, especially for treating anxiety and depression. However, a recent publication on 'amino acid therapy' has shown a very high success rate and no dangerous side effects (Food and Nutrients in Disease Management: Depression, Kohlstadt & Hinz, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, CRC Press, 2009). NeuroWellness confirms this data, with an 86% rate of symptom relief clinic-wide. In these difficult economic times, amino acid therapy represents real hope for the future.
