Argentina's 1150 Wines Now Available in Texas

Argentinean Vineyard 1150 chooses Mid-State Wine & Liquors, LP as statewide distributor

(Vocus/PRWEB ) May 12, 2009 -- Argentinean vineyard 1150 pronounced "eleven fifty" partners with Houston-based Mid-State Wine to distribute its five vintages to accounts across Texas.

The exclusive winery roared onto the U.S. wine scene last year by winning a Critics Gold Award at the 2008 Critics Challenge International Wine Competition in San Diego, followed by two bronze medals at the 2009 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo's International Wine Competition.

The 1150 vineyard is located in the hills of Mendoza, Argentina, surrounded by snow-capped mountains. The name comes from the altitude of the grape fields, in meters. The winery produces five distinctive vintages: a Cabernet Sauvignon, a Malbec, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and a Torrontes.

The grapes are grown in sandy, rocky soil bathed with lots of sunshine by day and bright stars and cool dry air at night. The challenging soil conditions and temperature variance make the vines struggle and the fruit ripens slowly, giving the wines their signature body and distinct flavor.    "This makes it an old world style wine, bringing with it sophistication, great balance and lingering fruit", says Leon Sierra, owner of Mid-State Wine in Houston, Texas.

Mid-State Wine & liquors, LP is a state wide wholesaler that has collected over the last nine years an exclusive portfolio of small-batch handcrafted wines and spirits. Owner Leon Sierra was a successful oilfield Electrical engineer and has personally selected the company's products from sources in California, Oregon, Washington, Texas, Italy, New Zealand, Chile, Australia, Argentina, Mexico, Spain, Turkey and others.

"We're very selective in the wines we choose to represent and the 1150 vintages are an ideal addition to our portfolio," said Sierra. "The 1150 wines complement a wide range of Texas foods--from spicy barbecue and juicy steaks to hearty pasta dishes and fresh seafood, making them a perfect match for wine drinkers across the state."

"Texans are known for living large and enjoying the finer things in life. That's why we're thrilled to make our wines available here and we're confident that Texans will appreciate the unique flavor and nose of our wines," said Sandra Beltran of 1150.

The story behind 1150 began in 1998, when a young group of friends came together to build a new hotel to serve the ripening tourist market in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Conventional wisdom suggested they build a 200-room commercial resort, but the team bucked the trend and instead created the 29-room boutique hotel surrounded by jungle and a powdery white-sand beach, with individual thatch-roofed rooms, private pools and VIP service. That hotel, Ikal del Mar, has since been sold, but it remains a testament to the group's passion, good taste and business acumen.

That same group of entrepreneurs took a hiking trip to Argentina's Aconcagua Mountain, near where the winery stands today, and was amazed by the region's natural beauty and fantastic wines. That trip led to the creation of the 1150 vineyard and has also inspired the development of the Ikal Mendoza luxury hotel, which will sit next to the grape fields and treat guests to the finest accommodations, food and - of course - wines.

Other holdings for the group include the popular Hotel Esencia, an upscale hotel occupying the former estate of an Italian duchess in Mexico's Riviera Maya. This hotel was one of the first places in the world to serve the 1150 wines and the warm reception there led the winery to seek distribution in more locations.

"We can now offer our customers in Texas the rare opportunity to enjoy a taste of Argentina and memories of their Mexico vacation when they purchase our wines," said Sandra Beltran. "It's all about creating experiences and reliving them with family and friends and great wines are definitely a part of that tradition."
