Organic, Green Mattresses Make Claims for Better Health

Lack of Sleep Affects Body’s Physiological Function

(Vocus/PRWEB ) November 6, 2009 -- A 2006 Consumer Product Safety Commission study estimated that the average adult sleeping on a conventional mattress will, every night, be exposed to 0.802 milligrams of antimony and 0.081 milligrams of boric acid—ingredients used to kill cockroaches! According to a March 2009 poll released by the National Sleep Foundation (NSF), 33% of Americans are losing sleep over the state of the economy and other personal financial concerns. The poll suggests that inadequate sleep is associated with unhealthy lifestyles and negatively impacts health and safety.

People are known to sleep more soundly on mattresses that use natural and/or organic fibers. “We’re finding more and more green products today,” states Jeff Kalatsky, owner of Back Support Systems, a company that specializes in products for back and neck pain. “People won’t buy from you if you aren’t going green, but we began innovating our green mattresses 10 years ago, before the green phenomenon began. I researched the materials used in the production of mattresses and discovered that green products used in their manufacture provided not only a better night’s sleep, but a safer one.”

"With the increased daily stress related to the economy and jobs, we are seeing more patients with sleep problems,” says Dr. Raj Kakar, Medical Director at the Dallas Center for Sleep Disorders in Plano, TX. “The good news is these problems are treatable. We have had many patients who are now productive, alert and energetic. They feel better because they're sleeping better.”

A good night’s sleep, like proper diet and exercise, is essential to one’s mental, emotional and physical well-being. Yet, many people do not get the recommended amount of sleep each night. Sleep is sacrificed, thus they awaken to a variety of consequences: irritability, difficulties concentrating, a weakened immune system and even higher stress levels. Furthermore, according to The Washington Post, a national survey of nearly 10,000 adults found that adults between the ages of 32 and 49 who sleep less than seven hours a night are significantly more likely to be obese.

"Lack of sleep disrupts every physiologic function in the body," said Eve Van Cauter of the University of Chicago. "We have nothing in our biology that allows us to adapt to this behavior." Considering that nearly a third of one’s life is spent sleeping, the mattress ends up being a key element in helping the body revitalize and function effectively.

Many of today's mattresses are made with synthetic materials that contain foams that break down, releasing harmful gases into the air. The breakdown happens from normal tossing and turning. Some of the chemicals released, called PBDEs (polybrominated diphenyl ethers), are used as flame retardants in conventional mattresses. Cancer; heart, lung and kidney damage; learning and memory deficit; sudden death syndrome; birth defects and skin irritations can all result from exposure to flame retardants.

Organic mattresses, however, have natural flame retardants with no harmful chemicals or gases. Organic, “green”, means 100% natural, untreated and free of any human-made products intended to enhance the product's natural qualities. Organic mattresses are made of organic cotton, organic latex and/or organic wool, which have been neither dyed, bleached, artificially softened nor hardened.

“Foreign-made mattresses can contain smelly, dangerous allergens like formaldehyde and carcinogens that can make you sick, as well as harm the environment,” explains Kalatsky. “Often they are simply poured into a mold and then baked unevenly, causing inconsistent support that does not provide proper orthopedic alignment. Mattresses should be non-toxic and hypoallergenic in order to be consistent with good health. Our green mattresses have a unique vacuum-injection process whereby the foam is odor free and provides an even consistency and support.”

Organic, green mattresses constitute a viable answer for today’s sleepless nights. They make the needed difference in overall health, productivity and peace of mind—and who doesn’t want more of that?
