Aurora, CO (PRWEB) November 5, 2009 -- High Point Academy Charter School in Aurora will receive a Commissioner's Choice Award from the Colorado Legacy Foundation for the school’s innovative student health and wellness program. This honor will be recognized at the upcoming Healthy Kids Learn Better! Legacy Summit and Luncheon, to be held Thursday, November 5, 2009 at the Hyatt Regency Denver. High Point Academy received this award for their extensive efforts initiated two years ago as part of the school’s focus on nutrition and physical activity as critical elements in overall student academic success and achievement.

The Academy’s multi-faceted initiatives include staff, teacher, student and family involvement in a variety of healthful programs, including defined classroom food recommendations (fresh fruits and vegetables for lunch & snacks), healthy hot school lunches, nutritional guidelines for school celebrations and events, enhanced physical education classes and daily recess, hands-on wellness classes, a school-wide, student-run health fair, and the hosting of two Youth Farmers’ Markets.
