53 Authors Donate Book Profits For Children In War Zones

SQL Server MVP Deep Dives royalties go to War Child International.

Greenwich, CT (PRWEB) November 3, 2009 -- When Microsoft Founder Bill Gates issued a challenge for Microsoft MVPs to "do philanthropy where you are," 53 of the world's most highly-regarded SQL Server experts took up that call. Together with Manning Publications, they’ve written SQL Server MVP Deep Dives. All the authors—many of whom have successful books of their own—are donating 100% of their author royalties to War Child International.

When I first floated the idea of a book for a children’s charity, I was thrilled at the positive response.
Microsoft grants the coveted MVP—Most Valuable Professional—title to leading contributors in their technical disciplines. SQL Server MVP Deep Dives contains chapters from 53 SQL Server MVPs, covering topics like database design and architecture, performance tuning, optimization, development, administration and business intelligence integration.

War Child International (www.warchild.org) is a network of independent organizations working across the world to help children affected by war. Over one billion children live in countries or territories affected by armed conflict—almost one sixth of the total world population, according to UNICEF.

SQL Server expert Paul Nielsen, who has blended technical work with a passion for helping children in need, spearheaded the book after hearing Gates' message.

"The MVPs are the brightest of the brightest, yet each one would say they’re honored and humbled to be a part of the MVP community," said Nielsen. "The number of children in need can be overwhelming. It’s easy to become cynical and think that it’s impossible to make a difference. But MVPs tend to be giving people and when I first floated the idea of a book for a children’s charity, I was thrilled at the positive response. These are folks who get it—they want to give to others and make a difference."

Nielsen added: "Most technical books have to follow an agenda and cover a list of features. This is one project where everyone wins—the readers get an amazing book, War Child and the kids they serve get support and exposure, and the MVPs get the freedom to write about their passion."

The book is truly an international effort, with authors hailing from Germany, Canada, England, Australia, Sweden, South Africa, Romania, Slovenia, New Zealand, The Netherlands, Poland, and across the United States including Nashville, St. Louis, Seattle, Denver, Princeton, Boston, Chicago, Houston, and one each in Fairbanks, AK and Waikoloa, HI.

SQL Server MVP Deep Dives will be available beginning the first week of November, with an official launch party at the Professional Association for SQL Server (PASS) Community Summit in Seattle, WA. The PASS Summit expects to attract more than 2000 database professionals. More than 20 of the book's authors will launch the book on November 4 at 11:30. More details available at http://summit2009.sqlpass.org/Agenda/SpecialEvents.aspx#Deep_Dives.

Following the PASS Summit, the book will be available at bookstores online and around the world, or direct from Manning at http://www.SQLServerMVPDeepDives.com
