American Independent Aging Expert Keynotes London Conference

Wisconsin author presents ground-breaking strategies for preserving self-reliance in old age

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) April 23, 2009 -- Author Terry Lynch was a featured speaker on March 19 at the annual London conference of In Control Partnerships, an independent company dedicated to reforming the United Kingdom's social welfare system. The conference, known as The Big Event, drew almost 1,000 participants.

"In Control," Lynch explains, "is a force in the United Kingdom enabling people with disabilities and older people to remain in charge of the services they need to stay in their homes." This innovative approach, known as Self Directed Support (SDS), is gradually becoming recognized in the United States.

Lynch was invited to speak at the In Control conference because he and his mother, Leila, were SDS pioneers in the 1990's, with assistance from Wisconsin's long-term care system. In spite of his mother's memory loss and other medical problems, Lynch was able to help her remain at home for almost 10 years with innovative and cost-saving strategies.

Lynch's presentation highlighted these strategies, which are based on his Eight Rules for avoiding mistakes and overcoming hazardous myths about what is 'inevitable' as we age. According to Simon Duffy, Chief Executive Officer of In Control, Lynch offers a unique perspective on aging with self-reliance and dignity. "His message is fresh, hopeful, and empowering," says Duffy. "It must be heard beyond the borders of the United States."

In October 2008, The Legal Center of Denver, Colorado published Lynch's debut book, "But I Don't Want Eldercare! - Helping Your Parents Stay as Strong as They Can as Long as They Can," which offers a compelling counterpoint to the traditional "caring for your aging parents" theme. "But I Don't Want Eldercare!" is available for purchase at amazon.com, target.com and on Lynch's website, agingindependence.com.
