Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) December 19, 2008 -- Melamine is normally used in food packaging and cleaning food processing equipment. However, it can easily rub off on food packaging and seep into food. The three major baby food laboratories; Abbott, Nestle and Mead Johnson, who produce more than 90 percent of U.S. baby formula, said they found trace amounts of melamine in formula brands such as Infant Formula Powder, Enfamil LIPIL with iron and Nestlé¹s Good Start Supreme Infant Formula with iron.
The melamine scare started in September when at least three babies died and thousands fell ill in China due to melamine and its related chemical byproduct cyanuric acid. The dual contamination has been shown to heighten the dangerous health effects.
"[The FDA needs to get a handle on how widespread the problem is and, most important, if both these chemicals are occurring in any other products. They just haven't tested enough to know that yet. This is a slippery slope of rationalization by FDA," said Urvashi Rangan, a senior scientist with the Consumers Union in New York.
The threshold on melamine is now set at 1 part per million in baby formula. This new safety standard and the amount of the chemical found in U.S.-made formula are still far below the amounts added to infant formulas in China.
