Sandia Hearing Aids Offers Solutions for Hearing Loss, A Growing Epidemic

Sandia Hearing Aids offers solutions for hearing loss which is the third largest chronic health condition among people living in the United States. As many as one out of ten people suffer some degree of hearing loss that affects their daily life significantly. Early detection and intervention are key elements when hearing loss is suspected.

Albuquerque, NM (PRWEB) August 9, 2008 -- Hearing loss is growing to epidemic proportions in the United States with one out of ten Americans experiencing some degree of loss. That represents over 190,000 people in New Mexico. Approximately 85% of these 190,000 people are either unaware of their hearing loss, or are unwilling to seek help for the problems they are experiencing. Hearing loss is the third largest chronic health condition, preceded only by arthritis and cardiovascular disease. As with any other chronic health condition, early intervention is key.

Hearing loss is often associated with aging; however there is plenty of supporting research that shows it can occur at any stage of life. Some types of hearing loss can run in families. Others can occur as the result of an illness or in conjunction with certain medications. The fastest growing area of hearing loss is noise induced. Changes in hearing are typically subtle and can go unnoticed for years. In many cases, family members are the first to notice that their loved one is asking for repetition or that they struggle to hear in the presence of competing background sounds. Today's baby boomers are faced with chronic hearing loss at a much earlier age, and with the newest most sophisticated digital technology, help is available.

For people with hearing loss, it may seem as if people are mumbling or they need to speak up. When you have difficulty following a conversation, especially in groups or noisy settings like a restaurant, or if you turn up the TV so loud that it bothers others, you may have hearing loss. The most important step you can take is to have your hearing tested. The test will identify which frequencies or pitches are below normal.

Living in our loud noisy world, exposure to loud noises and not wearing ear protection all contribute to hearing loss. Families become frustrated when trying to communicate with a member that has hearing loss. Spouses become irritated when they have to repeat things over and over. And, the person with hearing loss becomes embarrassed and often withdraws from social situations because they cannot understand what is being said.

According to Sylvia Tobin, MS CCC-A, Audiologist at Sandia Hearing Aid Center, "We process sound in our brain and when deprived of sounds, it can forget how to hear. Hearing loss may not change, but word discrimination, your ability to understand what is being said may. When you lose the ability to understand the conversation it is called auditory deprivation. Auditory deprivation is preventable by treating the hearing loss as soon as possible, giving the patient their best long-term ability to hear and understand. With today's rapidly advancing hearing technology, we are able to give each patient the clearest most natural sound possible."

Today's digital hearing aids are highly complex instruments that are programmed to the patient's specific hearing impairment. The devices include powerful nFusion technology, a breakthrough monitoring system that replaces mechanical switching with nanoscience that activates features automatically and provides a far more natural hearing experience. They are extremely small and powerful, processing sound more like your brain.

The initial office visit involves testing to determine the type and degree of the loss. Sylvia Tobin, audiologist at Sandia Hearing Aid Center along with the staff of hearing professionals perform a comprehensive series of tests to best determine the patient's needs. That information, combined with a thorough understanding of the patient's lifestyle and communication demands, allows the hearing professional to select the best hearing technology for the individual loss.

A family owned and operated hearing health care practice, Sandia Hearing Aid Center has been helping people enjoy conversations with clarity for over 50 years. They are committed to helping the hearing impaired. With over 120 years of combined experience, the staff is trained to dispense the most advanced digital hearing technology and perform thorough hearing testing.
