When Window Blinds Go Bad

Blinds Chalet's emphasis on safety is a welcome one. Since 1991, the CPSC has recorded reports of 174 strangulation deaths involving cords and chains on window coverings, 152 deaths involving the outer-pull cords, which raise and lower the blinds, and 22 deaths involving the inner-cords, which run through the window blind slats.
Typically, outer-pull cord deaths endanger children between the ages of eight months and six years, while inner-cords endanger children between the ages of nine and 17 months, who are placed in playpens or cribs near the window coverings.
Accordingly, the CPSC has chosen October as a month for consumers to evaluate the cords and chains of their window coverings, as well as consider cordless blinds and other alternative window coverings.
"The CPSC's initiative is an important one for the industry," says LeSueur. "It will help weed out unsafe manufacturers and boost firms that accord importance to quality and safety above all else."
